hotchkiss HISTORY

  • In 1892, Maria Harrison Bissell Hotchkiss founded The Hotchkiss School, with the guidance of then President of Yale University, Timonthy Dwight, to prepare young men for Yale. In 1971, Headmaster A. William Olsen '39 declared his decision on coeducation. Since then, Hotchkiss has grown in size and scope, and established itself as one of the premier secondary schools in the country.

  • Headmaster's Holiday
    The Headmaster's Holiday is a holiday announced by the Headmaster unexpectedly. A school day becomes a day of relaxation and fun.
  • Olympians & Pythians
    Olympians & Pythians is an intramural athletics event in which Hotchkiss students are divided by year into two teams. The two teams then compete against each other in various matches for victory.
  • Opening Chapel
    The night before the school year begins, the Hotchkiss community gathers at the Chapel to hear the head of the school's welcoming speech.
  • Senior Carnival
    The Senior Carnival is a fun event organized and run by seniors that includes fun activities such as cotton candy machines, slip 'n' slides, and dunking machines.
  • Coy-Tinker Olympics
    The Coy-Tinker Olympics is an egg-balancing and running competition between the Coy and Tinker dormitories.
